Today: United Airlines Boeing 777 Polaris Business Class (Brussels to Washington)

I recently flew with United Airlines in Business Class onboard one of the carrier’s flagship Boeing 777-300ERs from Brussels (Belgium) to Washington Dulles Airport (USA). In 2016, United introduced a new Business Class product onboard its newly acquired Boeing 777-300ERs which it named ‘Polaris’ after the North Star (aiming to “offer a shining star of Business Class travel that flyers can turn to for a tranquil journey”). In summer 2023, more than seven years later, United finally finished its Polaris rollout and now offers a very consistent product: every long-haul international flight operated on a wide-body aircraft (Boeing 777, Boeing 767 and Boeing 787) offers lie-flat Polaris Business Class seats.

United’s Polaris Business Class seats are crafted as individual, forward-facing, suite-like pods, with direct access to the aisle and 180-degree flat-bed recline. Although they are a bit on the narrow side, the seats feel comfortable and have nice features such as a “do not disturb” sign, mood lighting, one-touch lumbar support, several storage areas, and multiple surfaces for simultaneous working and dining. Besides the hard product, United soft’s Business Class product is quite good as well and comprises Therabody amenity kits, plush Saks Fifth Avenue bedding (which ranks among the best bedding in the sky), and regionally influenced in-flight menus. Although United is an airline that many travelers love to hate, my flights with the carrier have always been a pleasure with great service and enthusiast crews (and that was also the case on this flight to Washington).

Have you ever flown with United Airlines in Business Class (Polaris)? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

1. UNITED AIRLINES BOEING 777 FLEET

United is the flag carrier of the United States, serving more than 130 international destinations. With hubs in ChicagoDenverHoustonLos AngelesNew York/NewarkSan Francisco and Washington DC, United operates the most comprehensive global route network among North American carriers and is also the largest airline in the world as measured by available seat miles. Across both the Atlantic and Pacific, United serves more international destinations than all USA carriers combined and it does so with a large aircraft fleet which comprises 71 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 52 Boeing 767s, 60 Boeing 757s, and 96 Boeing 777s.

Here are some facts about United’s Boeing 777 aircraft:

  • United’s Boeing 777 fleet is a mix of B777-200s, B777-200ERs and the newer B777-300ERs (B77Ws)
  • Most of United’s Boeing 777s serve international routes, although some are also used for domestic hub-to-hub routes and flights to Hawaii.
  • United has been involved with the Boeing 777 since its development and was the launch customer of the aircraft type: Boeing delivered the first Triple Seven to United Airlines on May 15, 1995, a B777-200 with registration number N777UA (I previously published a trip report about my flight to Hawaii onboard this aircraft, which you can read here). The first commercial flight of N777UA took place on June 7, 1995, from London Heathrow Airport to Dulles International Airport.
  • The average age of United’s B777 fleet is 20 years. When ranked for the age of the aircraft, United Airlines is 69th on 79 airlines operating the Boeing 777.
  • United’s B777s are powered by two General Electric GE90 or two Pratt & Whitney PW4070/4090 turbofan engines, rated up to 94,000 pounds of thrust each.
  • With 96 Boeing 777s in its fleet, United is the 2nd largest Boeing 777 operator in the world. Emirates ranks first with 152 aircraft, and Qatar Airways is 3rd with 81 B777 planes in its fleet.

2. BUSINESS CLASS CABIN

United‘s B777-300ER features 350 seats: 60 Business Class seats, 24 Premium Plus seats, 62 Economy Plus seats, and 204 Economy seats. The 60 Business Class seats are located in the front of the plane and spread across two cabins: the forward Business Class cabin features 28 seats, while the rear Business Class cabin is a bit larger with 32 seats.

The Business Class seats are crafted as individual, forward-facing, suite-like pods, which are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, with direct aisle access for all passengers. In order to fit as many seats as possible, United staggers the seats side-to-side from row-to-row:

  • Odd-row center seats are fully forward facing and closer together with an electronic divider (which can be raised for complete privacy in case you’re seated next to a stranger). Even-row center seats are angled towards the aisle and feel a bit less private.
  • Similarly, odd-row window seats offer complete privacy since they are located right next to the window and fully forward facing, while the even-row center seats feel less private as they are not only closer to the aisle but also angled towards the aisle.

While United’s Polaris seat and layout were designed by Acumen, a London-based company that also delivered Etihad’s Residence suite, it was London-based company PriestmanGoode that created the look and feel of the Polaris product. The Business Class cabin in United‘s B777-300ER feels chic, elegant and stylish. which a soothing color palette of pink, light grey and the carrier’s signature blue hues.

3. BUSINESS CLASS SEAT (+ BEST & WORST SEATS)

The United Boeing 777 Polaris Business Class seat is based on an original, patented seat layout concept invented by Acumen, which United is the exclusive North American licensee for. The comfortable seat has a width of 22 inches (55.9 cm) and a pitch (bed length) of 78 inches (198 cm).

Next to each seat is a large solid surface cocktail table and an enclosed storage area with latching door, headphone hook and mirror. The outer wall of the console features a handset for the inflight entertainment system, a USB port, the power outlets and a bespoke reading light. The armrest on the opposite side of the seat’s console holds a panel with the lighting & seat controls, which can be operated from any position.

Right in front of each seat is a 16 inch HD entertainment screen, which can be controlled by a wired handset or by directly touching the screen. Right underneath the TV is a drawer (which is large enough to store a laptop) and an ottoman or footrest which becomes part of the flatbed when the seat is fully reclined.

What are the best Business Class seats on United’s Boeing 777-300 aircraft?

  • The bulkhead seats in both cabins – more specifically in rows 1 and 9 – have wider footwells, making them the best seats on the aircraft.
  • Odd-row center seats are fully forward facing and closer together, making them the best seats for couples.
  • Odd-row window seats are fully forward facing and further away from the aisle, making them the best seats for solo travelers.

What are the worst Business Class seats on United’s Boeing 777-300 aircraft

  • Even-row center and aisle seats are angled towards the aisle and therefore feel less private.
  • Proximity to the galley and lavatory area might be bothersome for passengers seated the aisle seats in rows 6, 8 and 9.

4. AMENITIES & BEDDING

Business Class passengers receive the following amenities on a United Airlines long-haul flight:

  • A Therabody amenity kit which is presented as a reusable belt bag made with recycled plastic. The kit holds an eye serum, face spray, hand cream and cleansing towelette, besides go-to amenities for arriving refreshed, such as a bamboo toothbrush, toothpaste, eye mask, ear plugs, socks and a pen.
  • Terrific Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, which includes select items that are made with recycled plastic, aligned with United’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. The bedding includes a large pillow, a duvet, an extra cool gel pillow, as well as a limited-edition day blanket from fashion designer Claude Kameni. Kameni is a self-taught, Cameroon-native designer who won a competition to design the new United Airlines x Saks Fifth Avenue day blanket, as part of Saks’ designer accelerator program, The New Wave. Mattress cushions are available upon request.
  • Slippers are available on all flights, and customized United Polaris pajamas are available by request on flights longer than 14 hours.
  • United-branded noise-cancelling headphones which are of decent quality.

5. MEALS

United is currently in the midst of an ongoing journey to elevate the Polaris food and beverage offerings onboard. Over the past months, United added more than 20 new wine, beer and liquor brands to its menu, including award-winning brands like Whispering Angel, Groth, Caymus Mer Soleil and Tito’s, and will introduce additional brands later this year including JUSTIN Justification and Bell’s. United also brought back customer favorites like the ice cream sundae cart, added an appetizer service and introduced nearly 100 new menu items across all cabins and routes.

During my flight from Brussels to Washington, a lunch service was offered right after takeoff. I choose the following selection from the menu:

  • Salad: Caesar salad with romaine lettuce, croutons, tomatoes and cheese
  • Appetizer: smoked Nordic salmon with beetroot & horseradish tartare, lemon and dill sprigs
  • Entrée: halibut with lemon butter sauce, herbed new potatoes, blanched broccoli, and roasted patty pans
  • Assorted cheese plate with grapes & crackers

IMHO, the food was just ok for a Transatlantic flight. I was surprised (and a bit disappointed) that the starter, salad and main course were all served at once on one tray (although that may be to liking of those passengers who are fans of an express meal service).

During the flight, several snacks were on display in the galley, including sweet & savory snacks, fresh fruits, and grilled cheese toasties. One could also order sweet potato-cocout soup.

A light dinner was served approximately 90 minutes prior to arrival, with a choice between spiced tomato rigatoni pasta with basil pesto, Parmesan, mozzarella, and sun dried tomatoes, or a beef burger with caramelized onion and Chadder cheese on a brioche bun.

6. ENTERTAINMENT

Each Business Class seat is equipped with a 16 inch touchscreen monitor (which can also be controlled by a handset). The multilingual video and audio content includes an endless selection of the latest and most popular Hollywood films, TV series, animation films, podcasts, music and games. It also includes an interactive 3D-map with real-time flight information, as well as city guides.

7. ONBOARD INTERNET

United’s Boeing 777 fleet is equipped with onboard Wifi and the prices depend on where you’re headed and how long your flight is. The good news is that United offers free messaging on longhaul flights, so you can send messages from your favorite apps, including iMessage, WhatsApp and Messages by Google.

8. OTHER INFLIGHT EXPERIENCES

# CREW: Many travelers are not fond of the service offered oby USA carriers (which is also evident from the comments placed on my Youtube videos of USA carriers). However, I don’t share this opinion, and I have always been taken care of very well during every flight, whether with American, United or Delta.  The crew on this United flight was super friendly and very efficient.

# LAVATORY: The Boeing 777-300ER features 4 lavatories for the 60 Business Class passengers: two lavatories behind the cockpit and two lavatories in the galley between both Business Class cabins.

9. POLARIS LOUNGE AT WASHINGTON DULLES AIRPORT

After my arrival at Washington Dulles Airport, I spent a few hours in the Polaris Lounge while waiting for my connecting flight to New York.  Located near gate C17 and open daily from 5:30AM until 10PM, the 21,000 square foot facility boasts the third-largest United Polaris Lounge in the airline’s network and is meticulously designed with detail and style in mind. Features of the United Polaris Lounge include 355 seats (including 42 pre-flight dining seats), 13 gender-neutral bathrooms, 6 spa-like shower suites with premium Sunday Riley health and beauty products, and suite-like rest spaces with Saks Fifth Avenue bedding. The lounge features a library where guests can enjoy a Washington DC-inspired decor, a bar area with a coffered ceiling, and a dining room behind lattice pocket doors (with a choice between à la carte dining or a buffet selection).

Today: Top 10 world’s best airlines for long-haul Business Class

Each year, I give a round-up of my favorite 10 Business Class products in the world. Flying Business Class is purely aspirational for most, a lifetime experience for some, and a must for a select few. With Business Class, the journey itself becomes a fun experience: you don’t have to wait in line at the airport; you get access to airport lounges; you interact with attentive personnel; you are treated to gourmet food and quality wines; and you can sleep in a comfortable flat-bed for total relaxation. But which airline has the best Business Class cabin product anno 2022? Here’s my selection of the top 10 best Business Class cabins for long-haul flights (reflecting my own personal preferences).

There is more information (with trip reports & YouTube videos) below my slideshow. What is your favorite airline for flying long-haul Business Class? Leave a comment.

10. BRITISH AIRWAYS

While British Airways’ Business Class (dubbed Club World) raised the bar worldwide two decades ago with the introduction of the first fully lie-flat seat and an innovative “Ying/Yang” seat plan, the seat concept itself is now dated and outclassed by some of its competitors. So you would not expect British Airways to end up in a top 10 list like this one, but it remains one of my preferred airlines for long-haul travel, because the product is consistent across its wide-body fleet and the seat is extremely private (as long as you don’t end up along the aisle). Also, British Airways has dramatically increased its onboard product over the past years, with improved catering (from DO&CO), excellent bedding, and stylish amenity kits, which rivals the best in the skies. In 2019, the airline also introduced a new suite concept onboard its A350 and B777 planes, with direct-aisle access, a suite door for greater privacy, luxurious flat-bed seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, enviable 18.5-inch inflight entertainment screens, and 40 % more storage space per seat (including a vanity unit and mirror).

9. EMIRATES

The success of Emirates’ Business Class product is very much based on the comfort and space of its Airbus A380 fleet, and that’s why the mega plane is rolled out on major international routes of the Dubai based carrier. With a staggered 1–2–1 configuration in Business Class, each passenger is assured of direct aisle access and a significant amount of privacy. The window Business Class seats are perfect for solo travelers, while the dual and more intimate seats in the center of the cabin are perfect for partners traveling together. Mammoth amenity kits, a huge inflight entertainment selection, and a roomy and well-appointed bar on the upper deck makes flying Emirates’ A380 quite an event, and in addition, the ground service matches the flying experience (e.g. chauffeur service, a gigantic Dubai lounge). Unfortunately, the Business Class cabins in most of Emirates’ Boeing 777s are laid out in a 2-3-2 configuration (with no direct aisle access for all passengers), which is significantly inferior to the one offered on the airline’s Airbus A380 fleet.

8. CATHAY PACIFIC

Hong Kong based Cathay Pacific offers a consistent and solid Business Class product, featuring a flat-bed that is just over 82 inches or 2 meters long. A bed extension increases its width by 6.5 inches or 16.5 cm to provide additional hip support, while the side storage compartment offers extra knee space for sleeping on your side. For sleeping, you may choose to leave your armrest up for more privacy, or down for more space. In fact, Cathay’s Business Class seat is identical to the one installed on several other airlines – such as American Airlines and Finnair – but Cathay deserves to take the top spot for their difference in customer service, impressive lounges, cabin crew training, and award-winning cuisine, whilst ensuring their price point still remains competitive. The carrier’s newest Business Class seat is found on its A350 planes, although it is basically a refreshed design of Cathay’s ‘old’ Business Class product onboard its B777 and A330 planes. Keep in mind that Cathay’s top-notch Business Class product is not available on some B777 planes with a regional configuration, so plan your travels accordingly.

7. VIRGIN ATLANTIC

Whether you’re flying for business or pleasure, traveling in Virgin Atlantic’s Business Class (called ‘Upper Class’) makes your journey something to look forward to. Over the past years, the carrier acquired several Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, which feature an entirely new Upper Class product. Laid out in a 1-2-1 configuration, every suite faces towards the window and offers deployable privacy screens. All suites transition seamlessly from an upright seat, straight to a bed. The suite also boasts Virgin Atlantic’s largest ever in-flight entertainment screen, at 18.5”and features intuitive new system, controllable by passengers’ own personal device. The Virgin Atlantic A350 also features a new bar area known as The Loft. As the largest social space in the airline’s fleet, it’s designed for customers to gather, chat, enjoy a drink or dine with friends. Virgin Atlantic has installed a slightly different although equally good Business Class product – with a fully closing privacy door – onboard its new A330neo aircraft. The latter also feature the Retreat Suite, a brand new innovation in Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class offering which consists of two exclusive suites at the front of the cabin.

6. ETIHAD AIRWAYS

Business Class with the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates is not business as usual. The Business Studios on Etihad’s A380s and 787 Dreamliners can be customized to suit every stage of the journey and are the embodiment of style, simplicity and functionality. The cabin has a unique dovetail design with forward and rear facing seats that creates a sense of space and freedom, with direct aisle access and convenient storage spaces. Upholstered by Poltrona Frau, the 22-inch (56 cm) wide seat converts into a comfortable fully flat bed of up to 6 feet and 8 inches (203 cm). The Business Studio offers a space for everything, including a concealed storage, a meal table and a separate large side table that can be used for laptops and other personal belongings when you are dining. Located between First and Business Class, there’s also a lounge on the A380 that seats up to six guests and is fitted with seatbelts, power supply and connectivity ports. Etihad’s recently acquired A350s feature  a different Business Class product, with 44 Business Class seats with private doors spread across 11 rows in a 1-2-1 configuration. Unfortunately, Etihad Airways’ A320 and B777 planes feature a less glamorous Business Class product.

5. AIR FRANCE

In 2022, Air France unveiled its new long-haul Business Class seat, which is progressively rolled out on its Boeing 777 fleet: reverse herringbone suites in a 1-2-1 layout, featuring cool gadgets such as sliding doors, wireless charging, and bluetooth audio. The incredibly private Business Class seat, attentive service, gourmet cuisine designed by Michelin starred chefs, a carefully selected wine and Champagne list, and a wide selection of in-flight entertainment make for an excellent flight experience, which is hard to beat and which confirms Air France’s position as Europe’s most glamorous airline. On top of that, there’s one little-known feature that makes Air France’s new Business Class product even more special and unique. Its bulkhead seats – which are located in rows 1 and 9 – offer an enormous amount of extra space, which equals that and even tops the space you usually find in First Class cabins. IMHO, these are currently the world’s best Business Class seats and they seem to represent some sort of a “Business Class Plus” product.

4. SINGAPORE AIRLINES

Singapore Airlines has always been synonymous with lavishing luxury in the skies. And the airline does not fail to impress. With their width of 30 inches or 75 cm, the carrier’s Business Class seats on its A350 and B777 aircraft are the widest in the world (too wide for comfort, according to some). The unrivaled space between each seat is a hallmark of the four-abreast (1-2-1) configuration that offers all passengers direct access to the aisle. Designed by JPA and introduced in 2017 on their A380 aircraft, the carrier’s new Business Class seat – albeit more narrow – is even better than the previous incarnation of the seat. A large back shell on every seat creates a cocoon-like feel for more privacy while the center divider can be fully lowered to form double beds, making the two center seats an ideal choice for customers such as families traveling together. Singapore Airlines also offers a fine restaurant-style setting and culinary service at 30,000 feet. Each menu, specially created by a panel of celebrated chefs from around the globe, is sure to appeal to the discerning epicure within you.

3. ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS (ANA)

All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline, has collaborated with famed architect Kengo Kuma and leading British designers Acumen to roll out a total of twelve completely redesigned Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which are mainly deployed on the carrier’s long-haul routes. At the heart of ANA’s new product investment is a brand new seat design for Business Class called “The Room”. Inspired by modern, multifunctional Japanese living spaces, The Room offers flexible doors for personal privacy that can also be adjusted to share the space with fellow travel companions – from dining together with the family to conducting meetings with colleagues. With its bold forward and rearward seat layout, The Room represents one of the largest Business Class seating environments in the world – with a wide sofa which is double the width to previous Business Class seating. With a design focus on minimization and de-cluttering, the Business Class seat offers a ‘place for everything’ including discreet areas for all personal belongings, with deep blue accent hues precisely placed inside each compartment.

2. EVA AIR

Taiwan based EVA Air calls its international Business Class ‘Royal Laurel Class’, providing passengers with comfortable sleeping space for a sufficient rest that is free from disturbances. The seats in Royal Laurel Class onboard EVA’s B777s and B787s are configured in a 1-2-1 layout that maximizes space. Privacy is assured through fixed panels that help create your own personal area. At the push of a button, each seat converts into an approximately 82 inches (2 meter) long bed, enabling passengers to lie down, get comfortable and sleep on long-haul flights. Thoughtful touches include a space to hang your jacket, a shoe cabinet, a retractable armrest, and a cocktail table. This excellent Business Class product is complemented by exclusive amenity kits, noise-canceling headphones, Fiji water, mouth-watering cuisine from all over the world (ranging from luscious beef steak to delicious lobster), and the warm, friendly service EVA Air is known for. To top it all, EVA Air is one of the few airlines to offer pajamas in Business Class; loose and comfortable, these garments are perfect for slumbering on long-haul flights.

1. QATAR AIRWAYS

In 2017, Qatar Airways took its Business Class product to a new, unprecedented level of luxury and style, raising the bar for all of its competitors. The so-called ‘QSuite’ features not only Business Class suites with sliding doors for total privacy but also double beds, allowing passengers in adjoining seats to create their own private room. Adjustable panels and movable TV monitors on the center four seats also allow colleagues, friends or families traveling together to transform their space into a four person suite, allowing them to work, dine and socialize together. Each seat is crafted with thoughtful and luxurious details such as hand-stitched Italian leather and satin rose gold finishing. To further complement the customizable on-board seating experience that passengers will now enjoy, Qatar Airways is also launching a new food and beverage concept, introducing a menu that offers a host of new dining choices. The QSuite, which makes Business Class look First Class, is only available on selected routes and aircraft (A350-1000s and some retrofitted B777s and A350-900s).

Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

Late summer 2023, I traveled to Greece’s mainland and the Greek islands of Santorini and Mykonos. You can read my trip reports here:

Today: Review of Cavo Tagoo Mykonos (Greece)

Blending cosmopolitan sophistication and barefoot island chic, 5-star Cavo Tagoo is a luxury hotel located on the outskirts of Mykonos Town on the idyllic Greek island of Mykonos. Comprehensively renovated in 2018, this sumptuous and super-trendy hotel features a fabulous infinity pool, a surreal aquarium bar, spectacular sunset views, a world-class fine dining restaurant, and an intimate spa offering a host of superb relaxing and therapeutic treatments. Gently tumbling down a hill to the Aegean Sea, the property offers a wide range of 83 luxury rooms and suites, furnished in the chic white and minimalist style that the Cycladic Islands are famous for. Guests can also book a private villa for that special romantic getaway, and all the rooms have a terrace or balcony, with options for sea views, private pool and/or Jacuzzi.

Cavo Tagoo Mykonos features in my top 10 lists of the best luxury hotels in Greece, the best luxury hotels in Mykonos, and the most popular hotels on Instagram.

Have you ever stayed at Cavo Tagoo Mykonos? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • Cavo Tagoo is located on the western coast of the idyllic island of Mykonos. According to mythology, Greece’s most famous cosmopolitan island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules and took its name from Apollo’s grandson, Mykonos. With its traditional whitewashed houses, iconic windmills, and cobblestoned mazy alleyways, the postcard-worthy island villages and especially the capital Chora (better known as Mykonos Town) devotedly preserve their authentic Cycladic character. Mykonos is mainly known for its party lifestyle next to none, its LGBT welcoming ambience, and its beautiful (but often crowded) beaches.
  • Considered by many to be one of the top hotels in Mykonos, Cavo Tagoo enjoys a beautiful setting in a bay on the outskirts of Mykonos Town. Tumbling down a rocky hill in sensuous curves, the famous property offers spectacular views of the deepblue Aegan Sea from its multi-level terraces and alleys. Staying here is also convenient as it puts you within walking distance of Mykonos Town and its nightlife; the hotel also provides 24/7 on-demand complimentary shuttle service to town if you don’t want to walk. The airport is about a 10-minute drive from the hotel, and the ferry terminal is only a 5 minute drive away.
  • Built in 1985 on top of an abandoned quarry and extensively renovated in 2005 and 2018, Cavo Tagoo Mykonos features a fashionable design. The hotel’s light-filled public areas pair traditional Cycladic whitewashed architecture with bold contemporary art and gleaming splashes of gold, creating a trendy and soothing ambiance that makes it a dreamy escape. Use of traditional rustic elements – such as roof top pebble bonding, exposed stone walls, and authentic bamboo ceilings – connect Cavo Tagoo with its surroundings, albeit in a strikingly modern and minimalist way. But while the sense of haute-couture chic is visible in all areas of the hotel, the property’s focus is still the startling blue of the sea and sky, which can be glimpsed from every door and window.
  • Located next to the airy lobby, the hotel’s center of action is the stunning pool deck, which has featured in countless Instagram photos. The 38 meter (125 feet) long fresh water pool follows the curves of the shore and offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and other Greek islands in the distance. The infinity pool was enlarged in 2018 and now features two rows of floating sun loungers which are obviously highly popular among the hotel’s good-looking guests, who comes here to relax, socialize, see and be seen. There’s also a third row of sun loungers behind the pool, with covers providing some welcome shade during the heat of the day (although it never gets too hot in Mykonos due to the constant breeze).
  • Cavo Tagoo Mykonos features 83 individually decorated and designed rooms, suites and villas, which all embody a Cycladic whitewashed design infused by minimalist purity. During my visit, I was upgraded to a two bedroom suite. Evoking a fusion of high-quality style and sophistication, the mesmerizing suite encapsulated the cosmopolitan grace of Mykonos in its brilliantly appointed interior. The suite’s cozy living area gave way to a lovely terrace with private plunge pool with daybed and floating loungers. The suite featured a master bedroom with plush king-size bed and an open-plan bathroom (equipped with one sink and a walk-in shower) as well as a second, albeit smaller bedroom with a similar layout.
  • Cavo Tagoo Mykonos features only one restaurant – called Meraki – which located pool-side in an open-air setting and offering beautiful vistas of the shimmering Aegean Sea. The restaurant offers a menu with casual fare at lunch but becomes a fine dining venue – and one of Mykonos’ most sought after dinner places – in the evening, serving mouthwatering food that is inspired by fine international recipes and authentic Greek specialties. Each morning (from 8 am till 11.30 am), the restaurant also puts out a lavish breakfast buffet, that will impress even the most seasoned travelers. Next to the restaurant is a lively bar with a stunning aquarium counter, which is perfect for a pre- or post-dinner drink.
  • Cavo Tagoo’s west-facing and elevated location affords incredible sunset views from every corner (rooms and public areas). Besides its picturesque villages and legendary party scene, Mykonos is also widely known as one of the world’s most magical sunsets spots. Each evening, thousands of tourists flock to the western side of the island (mainly Little Venice in Mykonos Town) to watch the spectacle of the setting sun painting the sky in the most magnificent color palette. But guests of Cavo Tagoo Mykonos won’t have to mingle with the crowds as its one of the very few hotels on the island offering unobstructed views of the sunset which – combined with the infinity pool – makes for some awesome photo opportunities.
  • Located one floor below the lobby, the hotel’s intimate spa offers a realm of pampering, relaxation and wellness. Facilities include a steam bath, sauna and several treatment rooms (for couples and single travelers). The spa offers a great range of treatments enriched with extra virgin Greek olive oil and valuable minerals from the Aegean Sea. All spa products have been diligently sourced for their efficacy, texture, fragrance and holistic integrity (and they are available for purchase as well). There’s also a decently equipped gym next to the spa although this place has no natural light due to its location in the basement.
  • The hotel enjoys celebrity status. Currently, Cavo Tagoo is the most popular hotel in the world on social media, with more than 2 million followers on Instagram, and more than 100K followers on Facebook. Part of the hotel’s fame is because the property was visited by A-list celebritries from across the world, who shared their holidays and experiences on social media, transforming the hotel into a magnet for the jetset. Regular celebrity visitors include supermodel Izabel Goulart, Lindsay Lohan, Pretty Little Liars’ star Shay Mitchell, Ariana Grande, Gerard Butler, Paris Hilton, Leo Di Caprio, and even the Kardashians.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • Cavo Tagoo Mykonos exudes a trendy and cool vibe. For example, lounge music is played all day long around the pool by an in-house DJ, which contributes to the property’s popularity among a young and stylish clientele, but may not be to the liking of those seeking tranquil seclusion.
  • The views of the Aegean Sea are amazing. However there is a ferry port close to the hotel, and in summer one to two cruise ships per day anchor in the bay in front of the hotel. This may occasionally block the view of the horizon or the sunset, although this won’t be an issue for most guests. In fact, it’s fun to observe the hectic activity around these ships from the pool deck.
  • There is a busy cliff road in front of the property, directly underneath the pool. The good news is that you cannot see that road from the pool deck (unless you swim to the pool’s edge) although the sound of passing traffic is sometimes audible from the pool area.
  • The property has no direct beach access, although there are two, rather unattractive beaches right in front of the hotel. Mykonos’ best beaches are located on the island’s other side, but are still within an easy 15-minute (taxi) drive from the hotel.
  • The hotel is located close to Mykonos town. The center (with its restaurants, shops and picturesque Little Venice district) can be reached on foot, but the walk requires braving a busy cliff road without a sidewalk, poorly lit at night. You have to be very careful, so I advise to make use of the hotel’s on-demand complimentary shuttle service to/from town (24/7), although the hotel car is not always available at times of high occupancy .
  • Cavo Tagoo Mykonos is an expensive property, but you should know that going in. Room rates are in line with what you would pay at other high-end properties on the Greek islands. While food is exorbitantly priced, it is genuinely among the best and most sophisticated food on the island.
  • The property gets some mixed reviews on Tripadvisor regarding its service. I can assure you though that during my stay, the service was nothing short of perfect and the staff couldn’t be more helpful, from the house maids and servers to the concierge and management.

MY VERDICT
  • Location: 8/10
  • Design: 8/10
  • Pool: 9/10
  • Rooms: 8/10
  • Food: 9/10
  • Breakfast: 9/10
  • Spa: 8/10
  • Service: 9/10
  • Value for money: 8/10
  • Overall experience: very good 8,2/10

TIPS FOR FUTURE GUESTS & SAVE MONEY
  • Save money: read here my tips for getting the best deal at a luxury hotel like Cavo Tagoo (and/or receive many free perks).
  • Room tip: book or request a room as far as possible from the main pool, so that you are not bothered by the (loud) music played there during the day. In addition, suites are well worth the splurge as they feel more spacious.
  • Read my tips for preparing your trip in time.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

IMHO, the best time to visit Mykonos are the autumn months of September and October, since the weather is still great, the tourist crowds have left, the sea temperature is at its warmest, and the hotel rates descend back into a reasonable range. The spring months of April and May – right before the arrival of the summer rush – are also a great time to visit, although the sea is cold and you may encounter some cloudy days. Mykonos is a very popular holiday destination for Europeans in June, July and August: expect hordes of tourists, nonstop parties and soaring hotel rates at this time of year. Summers also see a lot of windy days, with the Meltemi blowing for long periods, especially in the afternoons (sometimes gale force like winds).

HOW TO GET THERE

Cavo Tagoo Mykonos is a 5 min car ride from the ferry harbour and a 10 min ride from the aiport. Click here for a constantly updated list of airlines that offer direct flights to Mykonos Airport.

Today: My 2024 trips that I am most excited about

I wish you all a happy, safe, healthy and prosperous 2024! In these challenging and divisive times, we all could benefit by reminding ourselves of the powerful words of Martin Luther King Jr: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” At the end of the past year, I reflected on my most memorable travel experiences of 2023. But now that 2024 is finally here, it’s time to look forward and share with you 10 great trips that I am planning for the coming year and that I am looking forward to share with you in my Wednesday blog posts (which always feature a flight trip reports or luxury hotel reviews) and on my YouTube channel.

If you have some tips and suggestions for my upcoming 2024 trips, please share them in the comments section below!

10. FLYING UNITED AIRLINES’ POLARIS BUSINESS CLASS (FINALLY)

United Airlines used to be my carrier of choice for transatlantic flights, although I shifted to Delta since the introduction of Delta’s awesome Delta One suite (which I reviewed here). I’ve flown a dozen of times on United’s Boeing 777s and Dreamliners, but so far, I never got a chance to try out the carrier’s new Polaris Business Class seats. I was supposed to fly to New York on a United Boeing 787-10 featuring the new Polaris seats in 2020, 2021 and 2022 , but unfortunately, all three trips were cancelled because of COVID19. I now have a trip planned to Washington D.C. onboard United Airlines’ flagship B777-300ER, featuring the ‘new’ Polaris product. Named after the North Star, Polaris is promoted as a “reimagined, sleep-enhancing, departure-to-landing experience.” Each suite-like pod features a do-not-disturb sign, mood lighting, one-touch lumbar support, several storage areas, multiple surfaces for simultaneous working and dining, a HD entertainment screen, direct access to the aisle, 180-degree flat-bed recline and electronic privacy dividers.

9. STAYING AT DUBAI’S WORLD-FAMOUS BURJ AL ARAB HOTEL

My 2024 travel plans will bring me to the Dubai, where I’ll spend a couple of nights in one of the world’s most famous and iconic hotels, the self-acclaimed 7 star Burj Al Arab, flagship hotel of the Jumeirah Hotel Group. I’ve always been intrigued by the hotel’s reputation and its distinctive sail-shaped silhouette, which represents a glittering architectural marvel in the middle of the Arabian Gulf and a symbol of modern Dubai. According to the hotel’s website, the Burj Al Arab features “oversized suite-only accommodations where you can glide between the suite’s two floors along a marble staircase and soothe your soul in a spa-like bathroom with Jacuzzi, mosaic floor, and full-size Hermes products.” A few years ago, the hotel also unveiled a new manmade outdoor deck area – the so-called North Deck – which comprises two pools, a restaurant and a bar. During my Dubai trip, I’ll also explore the brand new Atlantis The Royal Hotel. The 795-room resort is housed in three 43-storey towers. Facilities include 17 restaurants including outposts from blue-chip chefs like Heston Blumenthal and Jose Andres, an enormous spa, an infinity sky pool, and the largest private beach in the United Arab Emirates.

8. A WINTER GETAWAY AT ALPINA GSTAAD IN SWITZERLAND

Switzerland is a small landlocked country right in the heart of the Alps, bordered by Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Liechtenstein. The country’s ravishing mountain scenery, rural villages, glitzy ski resorts, pristine lakes, and green rolling pastures offer unbeatable winter adventures and summer outdoor experiences. The variety of different sights to see in Switzerland is incredible, ranging from giant glaciers, epic mountains and wild rivers, to vibrant cities, world-class museums, and scenic train journeys. Luxury hotels are in abundant supply in Switzerland, and include Alpine retreats and stylish lakeside resorts. I have previously stayed at The Dolder Grand (Zurich), The Chedi Andermatt (Alps), and The Gstaad Palace (Alps), and in 2024 I am going back to Gstaad village to try out another sublime hotel that has single-handedly redefined luxury and alpine chic: Alpina Gstaad. According to the hotel website, the Alpina Gstaad is a discreet, exclusive icon and a unique establishment where authenticity combines with Swiss refinement to create an alpine experience like no other. The property is home to 55 rooms, a Six Senses Spa, and three restaurants, including a Michelin starred restaurant.

7. SPENDING A WEEKEND AT AMAN NEW YORK

It is no secret that I am a devoted ‘Amanjunkie’ (in addition to being a Soneva addict). Aman is known as the world’s most exclusive hotel brand, operating uberluxurious resorts and hotels in 21 destinations. Early 2024, I’ll stay at Aman New York, which opened its door two years ago inside the Crown Building on Fifth Avenue building, overlooking Central Park. The building is designed by Warren & Wetmore, architects of some of New York’s most influential buildings, including Grand Central Station and the Helmsley Building. Formerly the first home of the Museum of Modern Art, the 100-year-old building has undergone a monumental transformation, which has seen it fully restored to its original splendor, marking its next chapter as an urban Aman sanctuary. With 83 suites and 22 residences, the Aman group has finally brough the peace promised by Aman’s Sanskrit-derived name to the heart of Manhattan. The hotel is the second in a new, pioneering generation of Aman properties in urban settings, following in the footsteps of Aman Tokyo and taking the brand to 34 properties worldwide.

6. A BEACH HOLIDAY AT MEXICO’S RIVIERA MAYA

Mexico is one of the world’s most beautiful countries, with a diverse cultural scene, spectacular nature, a rich history, and a vibrant society. The sunny nation is also known for its stunning white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, which are the playground of Europeans and Americans during the northern hemisphere’s colder winter months. Mexico’s privileged location allows it to be “bathed” by the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, which make the country a paradisiacal destination for tourists seeking sun and sand. The marine flora and fauna also make Mexico a magnet for visitors from all over the world. My 2024 trip to Mexico will take me to the Riviera Maya, the well known resort district south of Cancun in the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. The Riviera Maya features wonderful beaches, turquoise waters, archeological sites, freshwater lagoons, and underwater caves and cenotes. The Riviera Maya is also famous for its hotels – including large scale all-inclusive resorts, – and during my 2024 trip, I’ll stay at the three best resorts in the area: the Belmond Maroma (which just reopened following a massive refurbishment), the Rosewood Mayakoba, and the brand new St. Regis Kanai.

5. FLYING ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS’ FABULOUS BUSINESS CLASS

In 2010, All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline, collaborated with famed architect Kengo Kuma and leading British designers Acumen to roll out a total of twelve completely redesigned Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. At the heart of ANA’s new product investment is a brand new seat design for Business Class called “The Room.” Inspired by modern, multifunctional Japanese living spaces, The Room offers flexible doors for personal privacy that can be adjusted to share the space with fellow travel companions – from dining together with the family to conducting meetings with colleagues. With its bold forward and rearward seat layout, The Room offers one of the largest Business Class seating environments in the world – with a wide sofa which is double the width to previous Business Class seating. With a design focus on minimization and de-cluttering, the Business Class seat offers a ‘place for everything’ including discreet areas for all personal belongings, with deep blue accent hues precisely placed inside each compartment. After my previous trips onboard The Room were cancelled because of the pandemic, I will now try out The Room this summer on the London to Tokyo route.

4. VISITING THE CARIBBEAN ISLAND OF ST BARTHS

The French Caribbean island of St Barts (or St Barthélemy) is a volcanic island fully encircled by shallow reefs, about 30 km (19 mi) southeast of the island of St Maarten. Whether in quest of exotic scenery or seeking exclusive travel, this prestigious jewel in the French West Indies is internationally renowned for its laid back refinement and its French ‘art de vivre’, especially among celebrities and jetsetter. But the island is far from snobby and also more accessible than you might think as St. Barts’ (or St. Barth’s) 14 beaches are all open to the public. The island is ideal for those seeking a Euro-themed utopia with plenty of shoreline to unwind and enjoy toes-in-the-sand lunches and quiet dinners under the stars – with a bottle of fine French wine. Those looking for an island with exciting nightlife and off-shore activities should check out St Barts’ neighbors Martinique or St Martin. The small island is also home to several ultra-luxe resorts and during my upcoming trip, I’ll stay at several of them, including Le Sereno Hotel (sister hotel of Il Sereno Lake Como, which I reviewed here) and Rosewood Le Guanahani.

3. EXPLORING PERU

Although nothing is booked yet, I am currently planning a trip to Peru in summer 2024 (a country which I’ve already visited as a student 20 years ago). Without any doubt, Peru’s greatest attraction is the mist-shrouded Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which was only discovered in 1911 and is believed to have been used by the Incas as a secret ceremonial city. No matter how many times you have seen a photograph of the iconic Inca ruins, nothing prepares you for the sense of awe that this magical place elicits in its Andes mountain setting, clinging as it does to rock and jungle. And there’s nothing like the satisfaction of approaching Machu Picchu by feet, which is why the incredibly scenic Inca Trail is back on my bucket list for 2014. Of course, Peru is so much more than just Machu Picchu and I also plan to include the following stops in my Peru itinerary: Lima (the culinary capital of South America), Ballestas Island (often referred to as Peru’s Galapagos), the Nazca Lines (a collection of giant geoglyphs), the Colca Canyon (the world’s deepest land canyon), the beautiful city of Arequipa, ancient Cusco with the Sacred Valley, and magical Lake Titicaca (the highest navigable lake in the world).

2. A ROAD TRIP IN THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST

In spring 2024, I am going on a road trip in the American Southwest (Arizona, Utah and Nevada). The aim is to visit some of the major National Parks in the Colorado Plateau, such as the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. En route, I’ll stay at several luxury hotels, including two very exciting properties. The first one is Ambiente, a Landscape Hotel, a new  property uniquely designed to blend in with the mystical red rocks of Sedona, Arizona. Ambiente is comprised of 40 cubed-shaped guest Atriums that are elevated above the ground by steel piers and constructed using floor-to-ceiling, bronze-tinted glass and matte-charcoal and rusted metal (the photos look stunning). The second property I’ll stay at is Amangiri, the iconic Aman resort tucked into a protected valley with sweeping views towards the Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument. Built around a central swimming pool with spectacular views, the stunningly beautiful resort blends into its dramatic surrounds where deep canyons and towering plateaus create a raw landscape of immense power. Amangiri also features a high-end ‘glamping’ site – called Camp Sarika – which is linked to the main resort.

1. STAYING AT THE MALDIVES’ NEWEST ULTRA-LUXE RESORT: SONEVA SECRET

Glamorous overwater resorts, pristine white-sand beaches, and a spectacular underwater world make the Maldives one of my favorite holiday destinations in the world. The archipelago – positioned in the Indian Ocean southwest of India – consists of 1192 coral islands and sandbanks (200 inhabited islands, plus 100 islands with tourist resorts), which are the visible tips of an oceanic volcanic mountain range whose outer edge at some points plunge to depths of over 3 km (10,000 ft). The tiny islands are encircled by magnificent beaches and incredibly beautiful lagoons, blessed with crystal clear waters and protected by reef structures. Each resort in the Maldives is located on its own private island, and the top resorts offer world-class restaurants and wellness centers. During my 2024 Maldives trip, I will return to Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani, my favorite resorts in the archipelago, and I’ll also stay at the brand new Soneva Secret, which will open its doors in February 2024 and aims to become the Maldives’ most exclusive resort. Besides the Soneva properties, I’ll also try out some other resorts in the North Male Atoll, such as Patina Maldives and The Ritz-Carlton Maldives.

8. Air France releases a stunning new YouTube video

To round off a year of celebrations marking Air France’s 90th and the Patrouille de France’s 70th anniversaries, the two jewels of the French aviation industry are honored in a special film featuring them together in spectacular aerial footage. At the end of September 2023, the company’s 22nd Airbus A350-900 named “Les Sables-d’Olonne” made its ferry flight from the manufacturer’s assembly site in Toulouse to Paris-Charles de Gaulle. For the occasion, the pilots of the Patrouille de France Alphajet operating a positioning flight in preparation for an airshow in the Occitanie region flew alongside the aircraft as part of an air display choreographed to perfection. Meticulously prepared by the crews, this special mission dubbed “Athos A350” involved eleven aircraft of various sizes and operating at different speeds flying together to create exceptional images. Directed by Eric Magnan (Airborne Films), a specialist in aerial footage, the film was shot from a French TBM 700 DAHER camera-mounted aircraft incorporating a leading-edge gyro-stabilized camera system.

9. Banyan Tree Dubai welcomes its first guests

Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

Late summer 2023, I traveled to Greece’s mainland and the Greek islands of Santorini and Mykonos. You can read my trip reports here:

Today: Nobu Hotel Santorini (Greece)

Situated on Santorini’s captivating northeast coast, Nobu Hotel Santorini is boutique hotel which offers panoramic views of both the caldera and Aegean Sea from its unique clifftop location. The property houses a signature Nobu Restaurant, fitness facility, dual-level infinity pool, 25 rooms & suites (including five pool villas). Just a 10-minute drive from the charming coastal town of Oia and 20 minutes from Santorini (Thira) International Airport, the hotel is well-positioned along the famed Oia-Fira hiking trail that runs between Oia and Fira, Santorini’s cosmopolitan capital. The property is managed by Nobu, the global lifestyle brand founded by Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro, and Meir Teper.

Have you ever stayed at Nobu Hotel Santorini? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • The Nobu Hotel is located in a secluded spot on Santorini’s majestic volcanic cliffs (caldera). The boutique hotel is set along a dirt road, which is essentially part of the famous hiking trail that connects Fira, the capital of Santorini, with Oia, the island’s most picturesque village. In fact, the hotel is currently the only development in this part of Santorini and its isolated yet central location is one of its main draws, offering the best of both worlds: it’s within a short distance from Santorini’s most famous towns and village (by taxi or on foot if you don’t mind some serious hiking along the caldera trail) but far enough away from the enormous tourist crowds that visit the island’s attractions each summer. The Nobu Hotel is also conveniently close to the airport (a 15 min drive) and the seaport (a 40 min drive).
  • The Nobu Hotel Santorini is located on the outskirts of Imerovigli village. Imerovigli is often dubbed “the balcony of the Aegean” due to its position at the highest point of Santorini’s caldera (300 m or 1000 ft above sea level). While the hotel’s setting is not as high as Imerovigli (and it’s quite an uphill hike getting to the village), the views from the property are just as stunning. The hotel’s communal areas (pool & restaurant) as well as several rooms boasts jaw-dropping views of the island’s caldera and the shimmering Aegean Sea. The property even looks out over the whitewashed village of Oia, which is world-famous for its Cycladic architecture and brilliant sunset views (attracting thousands of tourists each night), although the sunset views from the hotel are equally mesmerizing and crowd-free.
  • Opened in 2022, the Nobu Hotel Santorini was not built from the ground up, but is a sleek revamp of a former five-star property (Omma Hotel). The boutique property is designed in the traditional Cycladic style with a touch of Asian minimalism, resulting in an eclectic fusion of Greek architecture and Japanese interiors. The renovation of the existing hotel site – Nobu’s first venture in Greece – was overseen by Elastic Architects, an award-winning Greek company of talented architects and interior designers. At the center of the design is the hotel’s open-sided courtyard with swimming pool, which enjoys breathtaking caldera views. One side of the pool features a small outdoor reception area and a gym (on the ground floor) as well  as the breakfast restaurant (on the first level) while the hotel’s signature Nobu Restaurant is situated on the other side of the pool.
  • The social hub of Nobu Hotel Santorini is the beautiful bi-level infinity pool, which sits at the heart of the property. The upper level is a rectangular lap pool running parallel to the street in front of the hotel and enjoying phenomenal caldera views, while the lower level is a square pool, situated directly behind the upper level pool and enjoying a more private ambiance away from the street. Most guests will start the day with a dip in the hotel’s dreamy infinity pool, before heading out to explore the island. Then, they’ll return to have lunch and to spend the afternoon lounging by the pool on plush sunbeds that ooze style and comfort, before watching the sun go down, with a fresh drink in hand and in the company of likeminded people. On selected days (Thursday to Sunday), the resident DJ plays a backdrop of chilled island beats during sunset.
  • Nobu Hotel Santorini is an intimate boutique property, featuring just 25 bedrooms. Accommodation options range from the first-floor Aozora suites (with caldera & sunset views) to the two-level villas featuring private gardens and swimming pools (the latter look out onto the other side of the island and come with sunrise views). During my holiday, I stayed in a Umi Suite on the hotel’s first floor, which was reached by a separate entrance from the street. Styled in a minimalistic design, the cave-house style room featured a king-sized bed (with a Simmons luxury mattress), a lounge chair,  and an ensuite bathroom equipped with one wash basin, a toilet, and a shower. The suite’s highlight was its private terrace with Jacuzzi, which offered spectacular panoramic views of the Caldera. Room amenities included a Nespresso machine, LCD TV with satellite channels, and a Parlux hairdryer and Nature Bisse toiletries.
  • The hotel is home to the country’s first Nobu Restaurant. Set in a pergola besides the pool, the venue serves lunch and dinner. At lunch, guests can choose from a variety of Mediterranean dishes and rotating ‘off the menu specials’ (don’t forget to ask for the catch of the day) or opt for heartier options like Fried Umami Chicken Wings, Donburi and Wagyu Beef Sando. The signature Nobu experience is served at dinnertime and features dishes such as Nobu Tacos, Wagyu Dumplings, Rock Shrimps Tempura and Seafood & Beef Toban Yaki. The hotel’s breakfast – which is served until noon on a terrace above the reception area – features the popular Nobu-Style “Full English”, Scrambled Egg Donburi and Matsuhisa Benedict to sweeter Chia Pudding and local Kagianas, a simple combination of scrambled eggs, feta and tomato.
  • The boutique property is a member of the Nobu Hotel collection. Named one of the most innovative luxury brands by Robb Report, Nobu Hospitality is ranked among an elite selection of global lifestyle brands. Founded by Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro, and Meir Teper, with operations spanning five continents, the Nobu brand thrives in the world’s capitals as the ultimate destination lifestyle experience. Nobu Hotels blend modern cool luxury and minimal Japanese tradition into the concept of a lifestyle hotel. The first Nobu Hotel opened in 2013 in Las Vegas and since then an additional 35 hotels have been added both open and in development. Today Nobu hotels are open in the following locations: Manila, Miami Beach, Malibu, Shoreditch (London), Ibiza, Palo Alto, Marbella, Los Cabos, Barcelona, Warsaw, Chicago, Portman Square (London), Santorini, Atlanta, Marrakech and Seville.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • Rooms at Nobu Hotel Santorini are fairly close together and do not always feel very private. For example, several rooms on the ground floor have terraces which look out right on the public pool deck. Although these rooms come with Jacuzzis, guests might not be inclined to use them due to a lack of privacy, since other guests are constantly passing by at close proximity. If privacy is a must for you, make sure to book a first floor room.
  • Nobu Hotel Santorini is located right next to a dirt road which is very popular among hikers (since it connects the island’s capital Thyra with Oia). During the day, dozens of hikers pass along the property and have a direct view of guests lounging around the upper pool (which is located on the street level). It might feel a bit awkward, but that said, most hotels in the Imerovigli area are located along this hiking trail with their pool areas exposed to passing trekkers. The good news is that there’s seldom motor traffic at Nobu Hotel Santorini and the fabulous views across the caldera more than make up for the lack of privacy.
  • Nobu Hotel Santorini calls all of its rooms “suites”, but in fact they feel more like rooms than true suites. For example, while my room – the Umi Suite – was absolutely gorgeous, it was not a real suite, at least not on the inside. Except for one armchair, there was no real sitting area (although the outdoor terrace was expansive). Also the villas at the hotel are not what I would call true villas: each villa is comprised of two bedrooms on top of each other, but there is no separate sitting area. Something to keep in mind is that the villas – which are great for families or a group of friends – don’t come with caldera views (they look out over Santorini’s opposite side)
  • The service at Nobu Hotel Santorini did not completely adhere to the standards I’d expect from a luxury property. This may be partly because the hotel is new – and they are working out the kinks – but I did encounter several service issues during my stay. For example, the check-in process was an extremely slow and inefficient affair which took approximately 30 minutes (and after I was finally on my way to the room, I was called back to the reception area since they forgot to serve me a welcome drink). Also, I received the wrong orders for breakfast on each morning of my two-night stay (which became a bit frustrating after a while), and the morning of my departure – when I had to catch my plane back home – it took 45 minutes to prepare my hot breakfast dish. Overall, the staff was very friendly but they seemed to be lacking some training in certain areas. I hope that the service will be more polished next season.
  • Nobu Hotel Santorini features a well-equipped gym, but it lack a wellness center. Currently, spa treatments are only available in-room although the hotel owners have plans to build a luxe spa in the future.
  • Nobu Hotel Santorini is proud of its sustainability policies but unfortunately, it still offers single-use bathroom toiletries (instead of refillable glass-only bottles).
  • Last summer, Nobu Hotel Santorini was one of the most expensive hotels on Santorini Island. During high season, the entry room rates were well above 1000 euros per night, which – in my humble opinion – was way too much, given the lack of privacy of the pool area and several rooms, as well the service issues I encountered. That said, I noticed that the room rates for the next 2024 summer season are more reasonably priced (starting at 681 euros per night in high season) and more in line with the product offered.

MY VERDICT
  • Location: 8/10
  • Design: 8/10
  • Pool: 9/10

TIPS FOR FUTURE GUESTS & SAVE MONEY
  • Save money: read here my tips for getting the best deal at a luxury hotel like Nobu Hotel Santorini (and/or receive many free perks).
  • Room tip: if complete privacy is a must for you, make sure to avoid the ground floor rooms and to book a first floor room instead.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Santorini is spring and fall when the weather’s warm and the crowds are few. Like all of the Cyclades, Santorini welcomes the most visitors during the summer, so you’ll need to make your reservations at least two months in advance to travel then.

HOW TO GET THERE

Nobu Hotel Santorini is located a 40 minute drive from Santorini’s ferry port and a 15 min drive from Santorini (Thira) National Airport. The airport is served by most European charters and some full-service and low-cost airlines in tourist season (click here for a direct link to their websites), but has no direct overseas connections.

Today: My 10 best travel experiences of 2023

First, I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays with loads of joy and festive cheer.

As the year 2023 is coming to an end, it’s a good time to reflect on the headlines and stories that shaped the past year. Unfortunately, 2023 is a year that many across the globe will want to put far behind them. It’s a year that will go down in history as being marked by two big wars that keep sending shock waves round the world: the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as it fights off a Russian invasion, and the attack and subsequent war in Israel and the Gaza Strip (the senseless violence in both conflicts leaves me without words). Nature also showed itself from its most cruel side, with dozens of disasters happening around the world, such as the earthquake in Turkey and Syria that killed more than 50,000 in February and the devastating fires in Hawai this summer. One would almost forget that good things happened as well in 2023, such as rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence, major cancer cure breakthroughs, and renewable energy exploding around the world.

Since this is a non-political blog that tries to give you some enlightening travel inspiration, I want to focus on hope, positivity, and my personal travel stories, offering an escapism for the avalanche of bad news that often dominates the world media. Here are my ten incredible travel highlights of 2023. Early 2024, I’ll share what to expect from me in the next year.

There is more information (with trip reports & YouTube videos) below the slideshow. You can share your own thoughts on 2023 or your own 2023 travel highlights in the comments section below.

10. CITY-TRIPPING IN EUROPE

During several weekends in 2023, I traveled to some of Europe’s most exciting and beautiful capital cities. My trips – a combination of sightseeing and trying out some new hotels – took me to Paris, Berlin and Vienna, among others. In Berlin, I stayed at the legendary Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, a historic property right next to the Brandenburg Gate (where I also had dinner at the two-Michelin-starred Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer Restaurant), and SO/Berlin Das Stue, the city’s first luxury boutique hotel neighboring the world-famous Berlin Zoo. In Vienna, I stayed at the brand-new Rosewood Vienna, a fabulous five star star hotel housed in a historic 18th century former bank building on Petersplatz in Vienna’s Old Town. The highlight of my city trips within Europe was my weekend getaway in Paris at the Prince de Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel, where I was upgraded to the Suite Lalique by Patrick Hellmann, one of the most exclusive hotel suites in the French capital.

You can read my trip reports here:

9. TRYING OUT BRITISH AIRWAYS’ NEW BUSINESS CLASS SUITE

While British Airways’ Business Class raised the bar worldwide two decades ago with the introduction of the first fully lie-flat seat and an innovative “Ying/Yang” seat plan, the carrier’s Business Class product and mediocre service were quickly outclassed by some of its competitors. However, over the past years, British Airways introduced a new Business Class concept – called Club Suite – onboard its Airbus A350, Boeing 787-10 and some refurbished Boeing 777 aircraft. The new product offers direct-aisle access, a suite door for greater privacy, luxurious flat-bed seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, 18.5-inch entertainment screens, and 40 % more storage space per seat. After my three trips onboard the carrier’s A350 in 2021 and 2022 were cancelled due to pandemic, I was finally able to try out British Airways’ suite product early 2023 on a Boeing 777-300ER Business Class flight from London to the Maldives. All in all, the Club Suite felt like a a superb and competitive Business Class hard product, and the soft product was nice as well with great amenities.

8. RETURNING TO MY FAVORITE CITY IN THE WORLD, CAPE TOWN

“This cape is the most stately thing we saw in the whole circumference of the earth”, wrote Sir Francis Drake in 1580 when he discovered the Cape Peninsula. Almost 500 years later, the area is home to one the planet’s most beautiful cities, Cape Town (Kaapstad in Afrikaans and Ikapa in Xhosa). Known as the Mother City because it was the first city to emerge in South Africa, the city owes its multicultural personality to a diverse range of people and events, from the indigenous Khoi and San peoples to local African tribes, from the European explorers to slaves from Malaysia, Indonesia, Madagascar and Mozambique, and from apartheid to democratic freedoms. Blessed with fabulous beaches, beautiful mountains, world-famous vineyards, and dozens of trendy bars and restaurants to choose from, it is hard to imagine a more picture perfect city destination. Cape Town was the point of departure for my 2023 expedition to Antarctica (more on that below), and during my travels, I stayed a two hotels: One&Only Cape Town (a resort within the city) and The Silo Hotel (a boutique property housed in a former grain elevator).

You can read my Cape Town trip reports here:

7. ISLAND HOPPING IN GREECE & CYPRUS

Known for its plethora of archeological sites, whitewashed villages, fabulous beaches, mouth-watering cuisine and welcoming atmosphere, it is no wonder that Greece – the birthplace of democracy – ranks among the world’s premier-league travel destinations. The sun-kissed Mediterranean country is made up of a mountainous mainland and 6,000 idyllic islands and islets dotting the blue Aegean and Ionian Seas – though only 227 of them are inhabited. In 2023, I visited Greece’s three most famous island: the spectacular volcanic island of Santorini (where I stayed at the new Nobu Hotel), party island Mykonos (where I stayed for a second time at Cavo Tagoo Mykonos) and the lush Ionian island of Zakynthos, which is home to Shipwreck Beach, one of the world’s most beautiful beaches (where I stayed at Lesante Blu and Lesante Cape). I also hopped over to Greece’s neighboring island Cyprus for a holiday at the brand-new, ultra-luxe Cape St Georges Hotel & Resort. But the absolute highlight of my trip to Greece & Cyprus was my stay at the phenomenal Four Seasons Hotel Astir Palace on the Athens Riviera, which is a destination in itself, offering an incredible array of  restaurants, bars, pools, and beaches.

You can read my Greece & Cyprus trip reports here:

 6. HOLIDAYING IN MAURITIUS

Located to the east of Madagascar, the idyllic island of Mauritius with its secluded beaches and azure waters offers a unique experience of European, African and Asian cultures. It is one of the top four island destinations for a tropical holiday in the warm Indian Ocean (the other three being the Maldives, Zanzibar and the Seychelles). The island is famous for its lush greenery, rich wildlife, warm hospitality, and turquoise lagoons, which caught the attention of many early visitors, including Charles Darwin, Ernest Hemingway and Mark Twain. Just as was the case for many of these visitors, the island continues to captivate travelers today due to its diverse landscape and natural beauty across both land and sea. Mauritius also boasts some of the most luxurious and famous beach resorts in the world, and I stayed at four of them during my trip to the island early 2023: One&Only Le Saint Géran (my favorite property in Mauritius), Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita, The Oberoi Beach Resort Mauritius and Shangri-La Le Touessrok.

You can read my Mauritius trip reports here:

5. ENJOYING LA DOLCE VITA IN SICILY

Located between Europe and Africa and full of stunning architecture and spectacular nature, Sicily – the largest island of Italy and of my favorite destinations within Europe – has a charm that’s all its own. Most travelers come here to escape to a luxury beach resort overlooking the blue Mediterranean Sea. But you can also head inland to explore UNESCO landmarks and idyllic villages with magnificent views across mountains and brooding volcanoes, then savor fresh Sicilian cuisine and unwind at your exclusive island escape. Late summer 2023, I went back to Sicily and I stayed for the first time at the magnificent San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel. The iconic hotel enjoys an idyllic location in the hilltop town of Taormina on the eastern shores of Sicily, and comprises an ancient Dominican convent from the 14th century, as well as a Grand Hotel Wing that was added in 1896. The 111 guest rooms and suites feature original architecture and stylish furnishings. Facilities include an onsite spa, an outdoor infinity pool, magnificent Italian gardens, and several bars & restaurants, including the Michelin star restaurant Principe Cerami. The fabulous hotel was used as the setting for season two of the hit HBO show The White Lotus.

4. FLYING IN THE WORLD’S BEST BUSINESS CLASS SEAT (AIR FRANCE)

Last summer, I flew Business Class with Air France from Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport to O.R. Tambo Airport in Johannesburg. The flight was operated by a Boeing 777-300ER which was equipped with Air France’s newest Business Class product: reverse herringbone suites in a 1-2-1 layout, featuring cool gadgets such as sliding doors, wireless charging, and bluetooth audio. The incredibly private Business Class seat, attentive service, gourmet cuisine designed by Michelin starred chefs, a carefully selected wine and Champagne list, and a wide selection of in-flight entertainment made for an excellent flight experience, which is hard to beat and which confirms Air France’s position as Europe’s most glamorous airline. On the return tip, I was seated in one of the bulkhead suites in the front of both Business Class cabins. These seats offer an enormous amount of extra space, which equals that and even tops the space you usually find in First Class cabins. IMHO, these are currently the world’s best Business Class seats and they seem to represent some sort of a “Business Class Plus” product.

You can read my Air France trip reports here:

3. RELAXING IN THE MALDIVES

Glamorous overwater resorts, pristine white-sand beaches, and a spectacular underwater world make the Maldives one of my favorite holiday destinations in the world (and I try to go back each year). Every resort in the Maldives is built on its own private, picture-perfect palm island, with all of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands competing with each other to offer their guests unprecedented levels of mind-blowing luxury. During my 2023 travel trip, I did not stay at Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani, my favorite resorts in the Maldives (I am going back though in 2024, including the new Soneva Secret), but I tried out some new brand-new, ultra-luxe resorts: Jumeirah Maldives Olhahali Island, Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, Joali Being and InterContinental Maamunagau Maldives.

You can read my Maldives trip reports here:

2. GOING ON A SAFARI & BEACH HOLIDAY IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

Late summer 2023, I enjoyed a phenomenal safari & beach holiday in South Africa and Mozambique. My holiday took off at the world-renowned and state-owned Kruger National Park, where I staid at Kruger Shalati, The Train on The Bridge Hotel. Home to the Big Five animals (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), Kruger offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Next, I moved to Sabi Sand, a private game reserve located next to Kruger. There are no restricting fences between Sabi Sand and Kruger, enabling animals to roam freely in a vast conservation area. In Sabi Sand, I stayed at two of Africa’s most luxurious safari lodges: &Beyond Tengile River Lodge and Lion Sands Ivory Lodge. Sensitive off-roading practices during the game drives in Sabi Sand allowed for several spectacular close-up animal sightings (I even published a separate video about the safari drives). After my safari trip, I hopped on a plane and flew to Mozambique for a brilliant holiday at one of the world’s most exclusive beach resorts: ultra-luxe Kisawa Sanctauary.

1. EXPLORING ANTARCTICA

Antarctica had always been very high on my bucket list. Currently, the classic way to visit the continent is by cruise ship departing from Ushuaia in Argentina, a journey which can take 2 to 4 days (depending on the sea conditions) and which is limited to the shoreline of the Antarctic Peninsula. But since a few years, there’s another way to travel to Antarctica and that is by plane from Cape Town, South Africa with White Desert Antarctica, which is what I did early 2023. Founded in 2005 by record-breaking polar explorers, White Desert Antarctica is the only company in the world that takes guests as well as scientists by private jet from Cape Town into the interior of the Great White Continent. White Desert Antarctica also operates the only three luxury eco-camps on the continent – Echo (where I stayed during my trip), Whichaway and Wolf’s Fang. The entire Antarctica experience was mind-blowing and surreal, from landing with a giant jet on the blue ice runway and staying in Echo’s futuristic pods to visiting the nearby Emperor Penguin colony and traveling to the South Pole.

Today: How to book a room at a Four Seasons Hotel at the cheapest rate?

Four Seasons is one of the world’s premier ultra-luxe hospitality brands and the company is rapidly expanding its already impressive global portfolio which consists of 100 properties in more than 40 countries (with many more developments in the pipeline). A favorite among the rich and famous, Four Seasons’ objective is to be recognized as the company that manages the finest hotels, resorts and residence clubs wherever they locate. Four Seasons properties are created with enduring value using superior design and finishes, and supported with a deeply instilled ethic of unmatched personal service, which is probably the brand’s most successful selling point. Doing so allows Four Seasons to satisfy the needs and tastes of discerning travelers, and to maintain its position as the world’s best known luxury hotel brand.

But with the group’s stellar reputation also comes a heavy price tag and staying at a Four Seasons Hotel requires deep pockets (with most entry room rates well above $750 USD per night, excluding taxes and any extras). Unfortunately, Four Seasons currently lacks a loyalty program – probably because its wealthy guests keep returning anyway and because the brand’s focus is on guest recognition rather than the traditional concept of a hotel’s point scheme. But while Four Seasons doesn’t have a loyalty program, the reality is that there are several tips & tricks that can save you hundreds of dollars when staying at one of the brand’s properties and that all guests can receive elite-like perks just by booking in the right away. I hereby share with you the best strategies- for booking a room (or even suite) at a Four Seasons Hotel & Resort. You can share your own tricks in the comments below.

In this article:

FOUR SEASONS SEYCHELLES

1. Book a room via the Four Seasons Preferred Partner program

The best way to maximize value at Four Seasons properties is to book a room or suite via the the Four Seasons Preferred Partner program. The latter is an invitation-only program available through select travel advisors, offering additional perks for stays at Four Seasons properties. These perk depend from property to property, but most Four Seasons Preferred Partners hotels generally have the following benefits:

  • Daily full American breakfast for two people per bedroom,
  • A resort or hotel credit of $100 USD
  • Upgrade of one room category, based on availability at time of check-in (excluding signature suites and villas).
  • Complimentary high-speed Internet access for all suite bookings.

Four Seasons Preferred Partner perks can be applied to virtually any rate bookable directly on the Four Seasons website and are valid at any Four Seasons Hotel & Resort. The upgrades through the Four Seasons Preferred Partner program are prioritized ahead of upgrades for hotel stays booked via credit cards and Virtuoso (cf below), so chances for an upgrade are always the highest via the Four Seasons Preferred Partner program.

Classic Travel is a Four Seasons Preferred Partner agency and I am always happy to introduce you to them when you are interested in booking a stay at a Four Seasons Hotel (contact me here).

2. Book a room via Virtuoso

Virtuoso is not your classic hotel booking engine website. It’s the industry’s leading network of luxury travel advisors, spanning over 26 countries and 9,000 travel advisors. So when you book your holiday with Virtuoso, most of the time, you will be in touch with a Virtuoso travel agent and not make the booking online yourself. There are some Virtuoso travel agencies though that offer an online booking tool, such as Classic Travel, which is my overall preferred Virtuoso travel agency.

Booking a room at a Four Seasons hotel via Virtuoso instead of via another hotel booking website has the following advantages:

  • The single best reason to book a Four Seasons stay through a Virtuoso travel agent is that it means value for money as it will get you access to special, complimentary VIP amenities and perks, such as room upgrade, free dinners, spa treatments and/or unique luxury travel experiences. almost all Four Seasons properties are covered by the Virtuoso perks.
  • In most cases, the Virtuoso rate is identical to the Best Available Rate (BAR) found on the official Four Seasons website, which is a flexible rate that can be cancelled without penalty. For that reason, you’re leaving money on the table if you book a paid stay at the Best Available Rate via the Four Seasons website and not via Virtuoso.

It’s important to emphasize that early booking discount rates, special promotional packages, corporate rates, group rates, and other discounted rates do not qualify for Virtuoso benefits. Therefore, I always recommend to check the lowest, often discounted rate on the aggregator websites Trivago and Hotelscombined, and then weigh up the pros and cons before deciding whether to book via Virtuoso (best available rate with free benefits) or not.

Also, although Virtuoso and the Four Seasons Preferred Partner program seem to be identical (and are often offered by the same travel agents), they are not:

  • Virtuoso rates only apply to a selection of Four Seasons Hotels, while the Preferred Partner program is applicable at all Four Seasons properties.
  • Virtuoso benefits can only be applied to Virtuoso rates (which is identical to the Best Available Rate, as explained above), while the Preferred Partner program is applicable to all rates found on the Four Seasons website (including discounted and/or early bird rates).
  • The upgrades for rooms booked through the Four Seasons Preferred Partner program are prioritized ahead of upgrades for hotel stays booked via Virtuoso.

3. Book a room via your credit card company

When you own an American Express credit card, you can book a stay at several Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts via Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts. This will offer you the same benefits as when you would book a Four Seasons hotel via a Four Seasons Preferred Travel and/or Virtuoso travel agent:

  • Room upgrade upon arrival when available
  • Daily (continental) breakfast for two people
  • Guaranteed late 4pm check-out time
  • Noon check-in when available
  • A spa, food, and/or beverage credit (valued at a minimum of US$ 100 USD)

Holders of a Visa Signature credit card can also benefit from Virtuoso-like extra perks at most Four Seasons hotels & resorts when they make the booking via their credit card travel office and/or pay with their credit card. Contact your local VISA credit card company to find out whether they offer this travel service.

When you own a Citi Prestige Card (USA citizens only) you can make use of the fourth night free benefit: when you book a four night stay at a Four Seasons property, you get reimbursed the cost of the fourth night, minus any taxes and service fees. The fourth night benefit is calculated based on the average nightly rate of your complete stay. Reservations must be made through Thankyou.com or the Citi Prestige Concierge and you must pay for your stay with your Citi Prestige Card, ThankYou points, or a combination of the two.

4. Book a room via aggregator websites

Some travelers prefer to book the lowest room rate at a Four Seasons Hotel & Resort instead of receiving extra perks. The lowest room rate at a Four Seasons Hotel & Resort for any given travel date will mostly be found on the aggregator websites Hotelscombined and Trivago. These aggregators verify hotel prices at hundreds of other sites (e.g. Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia, etc ….) and show where you can book the cheapest room rate. Once you have found the lowest rate, I recommend you to book via either hotels.com (and submit a best rate guarantee in case that hotels.com would not offer the cheapest rate) or Virtuoso (in case the discounted rate found via the aggregator website does not outweigh the free Virtuoso perks).

5. Book a room via Hotels.com

Hotels.com – part of Expedia – is one of my favorite hotel booking websites, mainly for three reasons:

  • You collect credits towards free hotel nights via Hotels.com’s Rewards program. When you book and stay 10 nights at eligible hotels, you’ll get 1 night free to redeem at another. Hotels.com works out the average value of all the 10 nights you’ve collected and gives it back to you as a free night. All you need to do is make a free Rewards account and login into your account before making any bookings.
  • You can often apply 10% discount coupons. Unfortunately, almost all of the world’s major hotel chains are excluded from the list of hotels for which you can use a discount coupon (except for Four Seasons; more on that below).
  • Hotels.com also has an excellent Best Rate Guarantee (BRG) program: If you find a cheaper price, Hotels.com will match that rate (and refund you the difference) after you submit an online BRG claim. The Hotels.com BRG is available only for exact itinerary matches, including property, room type, and dates of travel (as is the case with all other BRG programs). The BRG also includes an identical cancellation policy (which can make it harder for your BRG claim to be approved).

Those three advantages work very well when booking a stay at a Four Seasons hotel. As mentioned above, Four Season does not have a loyalty program, so you may as well book the room via Hotels.com instead of the official website so that you will get some of your money back in the end (by investing it towards free hotel nights). In addition, as mentioned above, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts is the only major hotel brand that is most of the time eligible for discount coupons on Hotels.com, almost guaranteeing you a 10% discount on every Four Seasons booking. Keep in mind that when you use a 10% discount coupon, your stay will not earn credits in the Rewards program.

It’s important to notice that Expedia is currently rolling out a new loyalty program – called One Key – which will replace the Hotels.com Rewards program. One Key launched in July 2023 in the United States, with other countries to follow later in 2024.

5. Don’t book a room via the official Four Seasons website

You’re leaving money on the table when you book a stay at a Four Seasons hotel directly via the official hotel website, and here’s why:

  • Four Seasons Preferred Partner perks can be applied to virtually any rate bookable directly on the Four Seasons website and are valid at any Four Seasons Hotel or Resort. The only way to get these valuable benefits (e.g. upgrade, free breakfast, resort credit, and more) is to book the room via a Four Seasons Preferred Partner travel agent (since you wont’ get them by booking the room directly on the Four Seasons website).
  • Never book a flexible ‘best available rate’ on the Four Seasons website. Once again, as explained above, you’re leaving money on the table if you book a paid stay at a Four Seasons hotel that is a Virtuoso member via the hotel website and not via Virtuoso, because you can’t receive Virtuoso benefits (such as breakfast, free upgrade, and a resort credit) by booking directly with the hotel.
  • Four Seasons doesn’t have a revenue based loyalty program, so you cannot earn credits with the company towards free hotel nights. The lack of a loyalty program was explained by Four Seasons’s ex CEO Allen Smith as a decision based on customer feedback that showed that “Four Seasons guests are far less concerned about accumulating points to be redeemed for rewards as they are being in a position where they’re recognized and we understand their preferences and can serve them in that highly personalized way they’ve come to expect”.  The only way to make your stays at Four Seasons hotels count for some kind of loyalty scheme is by making the bookings via Hotels.com, where you can invest into a free hotel night for every ten nights booked (which can be spent at other Four Seasons hotels).
  • IMHO, Four Seasons offers the worst Best Rate Guarantee program in the industry. If you find a lower qualifying rate within 24 hours of making your reservation on the official Four Seasons website, Four Seasons will match the lower rate but you won’t receive any additional discount (which is standard policy with most other hotel brands). You may as well book via Hotels.com, which offers the same kind of BRG and at least allows you to participate in a great loyalty scheme.

It’s utterly weird that Four Seasons isn’t rewarding loyal consumers who book directly via the company’s official website, but that you can score free stays at Four Seasons hotels by booking via Hotels.com or get very nice benefits at Four Seasons properties (as if you would have elite status) by booking through the Preferred Program, Virtuoso or your credit card company.
