1. THE SILO, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

The Silo Hotel is a magical new space towering above the V&A Waterfront surrounded by the natural wonder of South Africa’s Mother City. The hotel is located in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex occupying six floors above Africa’s largest contemporary art museum which rivals the likes of the Tate Modern in London, MoMA in New York and Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. From the outside, the greatest visible change to the building’s original structure is the addition of pillowed glazing panels, inserted into the geometry of the hotel floors, which bulge outward as if gently inflated. By night, this transforms the building into a glowing lantern or beacon in the harbour. The Silo hotel has 28 rooms, including a spectacular one bedroom penthouse.

2. MIAVANA ISLAND SANCTUARY, MADAGASCAR

Miavana is an ultra-luxury lodge located on Nosy Ankao island, part of a private five-island archipelago off the north-east of Madagascar. Surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and the Indian Ocean’s spectacular maritime wonders, Miavana consist of only 14 one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas strung along the island’s western pure white beaches. Reaching nearly 5,000 square feet in size, these palatial villas have been perfectly designed by Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens of Seychelle’s North Island (which I reviewed here) and Zambia’s Chinzombo fame and allow guests to step directly onto the powder-soft sand from their private decks to enjoy spectacular panoramic Indian Ocean sunsets extending to the far contours of mainland Madagascar.

3. WILDERNESS SAFARI’S BISATE LODGE, RWANDA

Comprising just six spacious forest villas, Bisate offers a luxurious base from which to enjoy an extraordinary gorilla conservation experience and life-changing journey to this beautiful region. Situated within the amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, Bisate is surrounded by natural splendour, with sweeping views towards the Karisimbi, Bisoke and Mikeno volcanoes. Bisate’s sophisticated architectural and interior design is rooted in Rwandan building tradition as exemplified in the design of the Royal Palace of the traditional monarch. This spherical, thatched structure echoes the thousands of hills that dot the Rwandan landscape, while the richly-detailed interiors exhibit surfaces and screens made from a variety of woven materials with strong resonance in Rwandan culture.

4. ONE&ONLY NYUNGWE HOUSE, RWANDA

Alongside ancient rainforest, within the lush green expanse of a working tea plantation, Nyungwe House offers an exciting window to Africa’s fascinating wildlife and culture. Situated on a working tea plantation on the edge of Nyungwe National Park, One&Only Nyungwe House is the first of two new One&Only resorts to open in Rwanda. Exploratory treks and hikes through the forest give guests access to the park’s nearly 250,000 acres, where they can discover black-and-white colobus monkeys, gray-cheeked mangabeys, and more than 275 bird species. After full days out in the park, guests can retire to the resort’s modern suites and villas, each featuring decor accented with traditional African touches and vast private decks equipped with fireplaces.

5. ONE&ONLY LE SAINT GERAN, MAURITIUS

Mauritius’ much-loved resort, One&Only Le Saint Géran, is welcoming back guests, following a nine-month renovation and multi-million-dollar investment which has transformed the legend into a modern icon, and one of the top resorts in the world. Boasting the ultimate location on the north-eastern coast of the island, One&Only Le Saint Géran is setting new standards of ultra-luxury in the Indian Ocean and beyond, much like it did when it originally opened in 1975. The resort retains what guests have always loved – a sense of exclusive seclusion on its own private peninsula with a beachfront and calm lagoon unlike any other resort on the island. 6. FOUR SEASONS HOTEL TUNIS, TUNISIA

7. SOFITEL DARLING HARBOUS SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

The landmark Sofitel Darling Harbour hotel is the first new-build luxury hotel to open in Sydney since the city hosted the Olympics in 2000. Perched at the northern end of the ICC Sydney and overlooking Cockle Bay, the 35 storey 600-room hotel is the centrepiece of the Darling Harbour redevelopment and supports the adjacent International Convention Centre. Developed by Lendlease, owned by hotel magnate Jerry Schwartz, and operated by Accor, the Sofitel has a contemporary French design with 590 rooms, including 34 suites. There are three bars, including the upper-level Champagne Bar, where you can take in harbour views with a glass of vintage cuvee in hand. Signature restaurant Atelier is also on the site, along with nine meeting spaces and an infinity pool.

8. KOKOMO ISLAND, FIJI

Kokomo Island is Fiji’s newest private island resort, where pristine reefs set the scene for an unrivalled, all-inclusive experience. Located on the edge of the celestial Kadavu Island Group and approximately 45 minutes flight from Nadi International Airport, Kokomo is a true undiscovered paradise encircled by the famous Great Astrolabe Reef. A world away from the world, this is a place where spectacular white sand beaches will be yours for the taking, where privacy is paramount, and where service is superior. Conrad Bora Bora Nui is located in a private cove on Motu To’opua, an islet off the coast of Bora Bora, about 20 minutes by boat from Bora Bora Airport. Offering panoramic ocean views, access to sea sports, coral reef dive sites and hiking trails, the beachfront Conrad Bora Bora Nui features 29 tropical garden and beach villas and 86 overwater bungalows, including the destination’s only double-story Presidential Suites. Guests here can look forward to inspired experiences, which marries Tahitian culture and charm with Conrad’s intuitive, discrete, and seamless service.

10. LAS ALCOBAS, NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, USA

Las Alcobas, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in St. Helena, Napa Valley is a place where guests are pampered with the warmth of a place called home. The historic resort boasts 68 rooms and suites, all with gracious floorplans, and most with a beautiful outdoor terrace and vineyard views. 12. PENDRY, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, USA

Standing proudly on the block of 5th, 6th, and J, The Pendry San Diego resides in the epicenter of San Diego’s vibrant Gaslamp Quarter. 13. FOUR SEASONS HOTEL AT THE SURF CLUB, SURFSIDE, FLORIDA, USA

From the moment it first opened its doors on New Year’s Eve 1930, The Surf Club in Miami has hosted history. When tire tycoon Harvey Firestone first had the idea of a new type of social club, on board his yacht the Marybelle, he could never have imagined how enduring the appeal would be of what he would soon create. On this same 9-acre (3.6 hectare) stretch of oceanfront in Surfside, Florida, located in the northern beaches of Miami, Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club today comprises 77 guest rooms, a selection of hotel residences, Le Sirenuse Restaurant and Champagne Bar, three pools, a pristine beach, and Spa and Wellness Center. Pritzker-prize winning architect Richard Meier designed the three buildings that frame and flank the original clubhouse.

14. INTERCONTINENTAL LOS ANGELES DOWNTOWN, CALIFORNIA, USA

InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown is located in the Wilshire Grand building, standing 73 stories tall in the core of Downtown’s historic, entertainment, financial, arts, and sports districts. Ideally placed at the heart of the revitalized, energy-charged urban center of the United States’ second-largest city, the hotel provides first-class hospitality that seamlessly intertwines with the fabric of the burgeoning Downtown area. High-speed double-decker elevators provide a 40-second ride to an innovative Sky Lobby on the 70th floor which greets guests with large, panoramic views along with art and design inspired by L.A.’s unique culture. Each of the 889 elegantly appointed guest rooms features floor-to-ceiling windows providing spectacular views, and comes equipped with an in-room entertainment system.

15. THE WHITBY, NEW YORK, USA

Situated in the heart of upper midtown Manhattan on West 56th Street at 5th Avenue, The Whitby Hotel is a celebration of contemporary art and design. It’s just two blocks from Central Park and on the doorstep of some of New York’s leading restaurants, galleries and museums, including MoMA. The hotel comprises 86 individually styled rooms and suites, many with private terraces and floor to ceiling windows. There’s also a  stunning two-bedroom suite that encompasses the entire top floor and feature two terraces with views to the north and south. The hotel features a bar and restaurant, orangery and courtyard as well as several private events spaces and a 130-seater cinema. A a cozy drawing-room and terrace serve as a gathering place for guests.

16. 1 HOTEL BROOKLYN BRIDGE, NEW YORK, USA

This eco-luxury hotel’s 194 guest rooms and suites offers views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Built from the ground up according to LEED standards, the hotel was designed using 54 percent regional and reclaimed materials, including original heart-pine beams from Brooklyn’s old Domino Sugar Factory, walnut from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, and pine flooring from the Old Crow Distillery in Kentucky. Rooms and common areas are decorated with environment-focused artwork, including the 25-foot green wall in the lobby, a sculpture made with materials salvaged after a tornado upstate, and, in corner suites, a watermark painted by local artist Olivié Ponce in honor of the flooding in the neighborhood during Hurricane Sandy.

17. ACE HOTEL CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, USA

Ace Hotel Chicago lives in a stoic, industrial concrete and glass building in the West Loop, once home to an Italian-American cheesemaking company at 311 North Morgan Street, just across the street from 1KFulton, Google’s Midwest headquarters. The vision for the hotel is inspired by the ever-evolving design history of the city and the heroes that emerged from it, as well as the idea that to hand over the hotel’s public spaces to the city they were built for. The hotel features 159 guest rooms with skyline views, event spaces big and small, a really great restaurant called City Mouse, a top floor bar named Waydown and a café by Stumptown Coffee Roasters — their first outpost in the Midwest.

18. TRUMP INTERNATIONAL HOTEL & TOWER VANCOUVER, CANADA

The Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver opened to the public on the day that Trump Organization founder Donald Trump was sworn in as U.S. president. Regally situated on Georgia Street amid downtown Vancouver’s Coal Harbour, Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver boasts 63 stories of skyline-transforming grandeur. The twisting tower stands at 188 m (616 feet), the city’s second-tallest building. In addition to 147 guest rooms, the luxury hotel also includes a Champagne lounge, signature restaurant, Trump Spa, and banquet and conference center. It is also home to Vancouver’s first pool bar nightclub. Above the hotel are 218 stylish residences, offering residents spectacular views of the North Shore and beyond.

19. UNICO 20°87° HOTEL RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO

Situated in Akumal in the Quintana Roo Region, UNICO 20°N 87°W – Riviera Maya is steps away from stunning white beaches. 23. ITZ’ANA RESORT, BELIZE

25. CALALA ISLAND NICARAGUA

28. ALILA FORT BISHANGARH, JAIPUR, INDIA

35. PARK HYATT BANGKOK, THAILAND

Once the scene of elegant garden parties hosted by the British Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand, the prime corner plot in the heart of Bangkok is now home to the new Park Hyatt Bangkok hotel. The interior design was eloquently executed by New York-based Yabu Pushelberg, who also served as the designers of the brand’s flagship Park Hyatt New York hotel. This is the award-winning design duo’s first hotel in Bangkok, and they have created a calm and stylish environment unfolding through a series of unique and intimate spaces. The hotel and an adjacent luxury shopping mall are bound together by a continual looped form merging plinth and tower. Drawing on motifs and patterns found in traditional Thai architecture, the eye-catching façade is clad in extruded aluminium tiles, creating a shimmering moiré-like pattern. Park Hyatt Bangkok houses 222 luxurious guestrooms, including 32 suites, all blessed with unobstructed views of the capital.

36. THE RITZ-CARLTON KOH SAMUI, THAILAND

Located on the tropical island paradise of Koh Samui on the Gulf of Thailand, The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui seamlessly combines the brand’s legendary service with the traditional spirit of Thai hospitality and colorful Samui island life culture to create a unique melting pot of indelible new memories. The hotel offers 175 suites and pool villas nestled amid 58 acres that overlook the turquoise waters of The Gulf of Thailand. Andaz Singapore is housed in DUO, a striking pair of concave skyscrapers, 186m (6101 ft) and 170 m (558 ft) high, clad in a latticework of hexagonal windows. Located at the heart of Sinagpore’s cultural crossroads, the locally inspired boutique hotel draws inspiration from its lively surroundings – intimate alleyways filled with shop houses in vibrant colours and textures. Andaz Singapore houses 342 contemporary guestrooms, including 26 suites, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing stunning views of the city. 38. CAPELLA SHANGHAI, CHINA

Set against the backdrop of a vibrant cosmopolitan city in Shanghai’s architectural heritage Jian Ye Li estate, Capella Shanghai is a unique all-villa urban resort in the last remaining cluster of historical “shikumen” (stone warehouse gate) estate. Centrally located within the cultural preservation zone of Xuhui District, the Jian Ye Li estate was originally built by French real estate company Foncière et Immobilière de Chine in the 1930s to house the upper-class. The compound houses 22 rows of shikumen lanes, connecting more than 200 two-story houses dating back to the 1930s. Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li will serve as a showcase of Shanghai’s residential heritage featuring Chinese courtyard houses with Parisian flair. 39. W SHANGHAI – THE BUND, SHANGHAI, CHINA

W Shanghai – The Bund draws upon colonial gamour and futuristic motifs, with nearly all guestrooms featuring views of the Huangpu River due to the uniquely curved frame of the building’s edifice. The hotel features 374 stylish guestrooms and suites, each appointed with the signature W bed adorned with a cheeky pillow in the shape of Shanghai’s famous Xiaolongbao (soup) dumpling and chopsticks. 40. THE ST REGIS SHANGHAI JINGAN, SHANGHAI, CHINA

The St. Regis Shanghai Jingan opened its doors in one of the most exclusive, sought-after locations in the heart of the city’s central business district. Part of a new mixed-use development, the hotel offers approximately 480 guestrooms, including 41 suites and 47 residences. All guestrooms are located from the 29th to 59th floors, boasting stunning views of the Shanghai skyline. There are several three-bedroom luxury St. Regis apartments on the top floors of the building, redefining high-end city living in downtown Shanghai. 41. ROSEWOOD SANYA, CHINA

Rosewood Sanya is part of an integrated resort set within 40 acres (16 hectares) of landscaped gardens surrounding the Sanya Forum, the largest convention center in Haitang Bay. The resort’s design incorporates wood, tribal totems and aquatic elements to create a serene and contemporary space, celebrating the beauty of nature and the serenity of the ocean. All 246 guestrooms at Rosewood Sanya are ocean facing and 45 guestrooms include balcony plunge pools. Other facilities include an infinity pool located on 13th floor, a health club and Sense, A Rosewood Spa. Nearly 3,425 square meters of meeting and function space including a pillar-less ballroom, six salons and The Pavilion, a Rosewood signature residential-style meeting and function space with a sea view terrace and open show kitchen. The hotel’s five restaurants and lounges feature a variety of local and international cuisines.

42. THE BULGARI HOTEL BEIJING, CHINA

Crowning 7 years of meticulous construction works, the Bulgari Bejing balances art, design and nature with sculpted gardens that extend along the Liangma River. Designed by the acclaimed architectural firm Antonio CItterio Patricia Viel, each element of the hotel has been handpicked for a seamless sense of refinement. The hotel’s 119 exquisitely furnished rooms include the exceptional Bulgari Suite, with some of the best views over the city. The Bulgari Spa adds a further luxurious touch to the guest experience featuring 11 treatment rooms, a fitness center and a large pool made of shimmering mosaic tiles inspired by Terme di Caracalla Roman baths. Hôtel de Crillon reopened as a Rosewood Hotel after undergoing an extensive four-year restoration. 51. NOBU HOTEL SHOREDITCH, LONDON, UK

The Nobu Hotel Group opened a new hotel at 10-50 Willow Street in the Shoreditch area of London with food and beverage menus to be developed by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa specifically and uniquely for the hotel. The 143 rooms and seven suites have been designed by Studio Mica, and reference the ‘East meets West’ theme of the wider brand, with added local touches such as concrete walls and murals by local artists. 52. THE FONTENAY HAMBURG, GERMANY

In 1816, Hamburg-based shipbroker John Fontenay acquired a unique plot of land on the beautiful shores of the Alster lake in the heart of the city.
